Can I Add an EV Charger to My Existing Solar Panels?

Yes, and it is a very good pairing. You do not need to replace your panels or start again.
What is involved
An EV charger is installed on your home's electrical system and draws from whatever is available: your solar, your battery or the grid. For a standard installation, your existing solar system does not need to be modified.
To charge from the sun, choose a solar-aware smart charger. These have a mode that watches your home's generation and adjusts the charging power to match your surplus solar. A small sensor, called a CT clamp, measures the flow of power at your meter or inverter. Most chargers need a minimum surplus to start, often around 1.4 kW, so on a dull day the car may switch to grid power if you allow it.
Realistic expectations
- The UK's sun does not always line up with when the car is parked, so you will typically charge partly from solar and partly from cheap grid power.
- A small system (3 to 4 kW) will often produce less than a 7 kW charger draws. The charger throttles down to use the surplus and can top up from the grid if you allow it.
- If you are out all day, the car may not be home when the sun is shining. A home battery can store daytime power for the evening.
- Using your surplus to charge the car is usually worth more than exporting it, because export rates are generally lower than the cost of grid electricity or fuel.
Things we check before installing
- Your fuse board and available supply capacity
- Whether your inverter and battery work well with the charger
- Cable routing and the best mounting spot
- Notification to, or agreement with, the local network operator where required
Bottom line: adding a charger to existing solar is usually a quick, single-visit job, and a solar-aware charger lets your roof power a good share of your driving.
